Synopsis

Queer people from all over the world have made Berlin what it is today. Many leave their home because they want to, others because they have to. This film follows a few of them.
The queer universe of Berlin mirrors the movements of the world and is constantly evolving.
In recent decades, a multitude of identities have made themselves heard. Today, gay and lesbian are only two terms among many.

QUEER EXILE BERLIN is the third part of the queer Berlin documentary trilogy following OUT IN EAST BERLIN (2013)* and MY WONDERFUL WEST BERLIN (2017).

Eunice from Portugal falls in love on a trip to the city at age 17 and moves there in 2017. Today she works in a Berlin night club and has started her transition process. Haidar from Syria received a student visa for Germany. He later applied for asylum in Germany and now works as a dancer and performer called "The Darvish". Jean-Ulrick, an artist born in Haiti and raised in New York, moves to Berlin in early 2000 and can't imagine living anywhere else. Mischa Badasyan, who was born in Russia but is of Armenian descent, has explored his body and sexuality in outstanding live performances and now engages with political movements beyond the queer community. Drag queen Gloria arrived in Berlin at the age of 6 and grew up in a politicized environment with her mother. As a seven-year-old, she was already at the first homosexual demonstration in Berlin with her mother. Monika fights as an activist in nearby Szczecin, Poland, for the fundamental human rights of queers. Berlin is a place of longing for her, but she does not want to abandon young queers in her home country.

In QUEER EXILE BERLIN we face the current political fights and intimate discussions of the queer scene which are translatable to straight and queer communities all over the world.
The film interweaves the personal stories and ambitions of the queer protagonists with historical events and current issues. The result is a true image of Berlin as a perpetual place of longing and a challenge to all those who arrive there. A city in constant transition.

How do you make a life in Berlin? Come and see for yourself!

Queer and Exile in Berlin

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

"Following OUT IN OST-BERLIN and MEIN WUNDERBARES WEST-BERLIN, the third Berlin film QUEER EXILE BERLIN takes a look at Berlin today. It presents various queer ways of life, all of which tell of different origins, emotional challenges and perhaps of individual contradictions.

Berlin generates fascination and repulsion among new Berliners. At a time when queer life is increasingly coming under fire in many places, the film aims to paint a vivid portrait of queer Berlin and some of its political movements and debates that seem transferable to other places around the world.

With the help of inputs from the protagonists, the scenes for a film have been created that, as the festival screenings so far have shown, will hopefully continue to connect with as many viewers as possible and raise interesting questions."

Jochen Hick, March 2024

Background

As a result of the 2008 financial crisis, many people from southern Europe have moved to the supposedly more economically stable Germany. Queer Italians, Portuguese, Spaniards and Greeks have chosen Berlin as their new home.
In line with the large refugee movements, many queer Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans have also come to Berlin in the last ten years. Due to the political developments in Turkey in recent years and the start of the war in Ukraine, queer people from these two countries have also increasingly fled to Berlin.
With the increasing tightening of anti-queer legislation in Russia, many Russian queers came to Berlin from the beginning of 2000, not least because there is a large Russian-speaking community there.
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the number of annual visitors to Berlin has quadrupled. Even events such as the atmosphere at the 2006 World Cup left some queer tourists with the feeling that Berlin could become an interesting place to live, perhaps a more relaxed alternative to their current lives in Paris, London, New York or elsewhere. Others want to spend their retirement in Berlin.
Regardless of the reasons why queer people come to Berlin, they have to deal with problems such as housing shortages, language difficulties, loneliness and job hunting just like all other new Berliners.

Klaus Schumann

Berlin: Promises, challenges and Corona

Corona hit Berlin in March 2020 with the first lockdown and was a painful turning point for the queer scene in particular, as many queer people tended to live alone or in families of choice. There was a sudden lack of meeting places, and not just for many new Berliners: Cafés, bars and parties. Everything that had previously made Berlin so desirable now seemed to have been turned into its opposite. There was a lot of loneliness, no jobs, drugs. Some queer people returned home to their families because they could no longer afford the city or urgently needed to start drug rehab.

Time of revolt: Diversities after the gay and lesbian movement of the 70's and 80's

In 2021, there were almost ten other Pride demonstrations in Berlin in addition to the big CSD parade. At the 'Stern-Marsch' (Star March) on June 25, 2021 alone, East Pride, QTIBIPOC United Pride and Queerschutz Now Demonstration met at Alexanderplatz, while Anarchist Pride, which took place on the same day, avoided Alexanderplatz. Other demonstrations such as Marzahn Pride and Trans Pride took place on other days.

Since 2013, theDyke* March Berlin has always taken place on the eve of the annual Berlin Pride parade. Alongside East Pride and Internationalist Pride, which also take place in summer, the Dyke* March Berlin (pictured below) is one of the largest queer demonstrations without the participation of formations from companies, political parties or associations.

New movements and oppositions

Not only, but above all in Eastern European countries such as Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Russia, there have been an increasing number of Pride demonstrations or attempts to organize such demonstrations since 2000.
While they were practically never successful in Russia and were crushed by the authorities, a certain political transformation took place in the eastern and south-eastern EU states, often only for reasons of expediency in order to avoid financial disciplinary measures from Brussels.
Protgonist Monika Tichy was one of the organizers of the annual Pride demonstration in her hometown of Szczecin (Poland) for several years. Gloria Viagra (large photo above) and many Berliners try to support the Slubice-Frankfurt Pride, which takes place only about 100 km from Berlin, with their presence.
For many queer people in Europe and the rest of the world, the positive developments of recent years seem to be gradually reversing and living conditions are deteriorating again, despite apparent media representation. This also affects Germany and Berlin, where anti-queer violence is on the rise and right-wing conservative and far-right views against queer life are resonating.

Counter-demonstrators at the Slubice-Frankfurt Pride (photo below), which has been moving from the Polish border town of Slubice across the Oder rive bridge to Frankfurt/Oder for several years.

Disruption and the search for visibility: AIDS and its ramifications

Until the mid-1990s, Berlin, Germany and the USA had their highest number of deaths from AIDS. It was also the time when protagonist:in Gloria Viagra had her coming out. For Jean-Ulrick Désert, who was living in New York at the time, it was the first major turning point in his life as a queer man. The introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) in 1995 brought the prospect of surviving AIDS and living with HIV for the first time. It took another 20 years before PreP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) was approved for the first time in Europe in 2016 (in the USA since 2012). Correct use offers 98% protection against HIV. So it took over 30 years before fear-free sex was possible again for many queer and gender-diverse people for the first time.

In 1993, an Act-Up demonstration took place during the World AIDS Congress in Berlin (photo below and film clips).

The Protagonists

Eunice Franco Eunice Franco, grew up in Lisbon, Portugal. She arrived in Berlin in December 2017 after being fascinated by the city on a previous summer trip. Back then she only knew two people in Berlin. Soon she met a circle of friends, going out and exploring Berlin's night life. She took cleaning jobs and worked in call centers and for various queer club events. Now she is constantly working at Trauma Bar. Eunice first started her transitioning process in Portugal but had to stop for personal reasons before she took a second chance in Berlin. In October 2021 she had her first sexual assignment surgery in Spain. Born in 1998, Eunice considers herself a typical Gen Z and is the youngest of six protagonists of the film.

Haidar Darwish Haidar Darwish (The Darvish) grew up in Latakia, Syria. During the peak of the Syrian war Haidar succeeded in receiving a student visa for Germany and came to Berlin in September 2016. Later on he applied for asylum as a LGBT person. Haidar works as a belly dancer, performer and event producer. Together with the drag artist and political activist Olympia Bukkakis he hosts the performance and party series QUEENS AGAINST BORDERS, together with the drag artist Judy LaDivina he host the party series YALLA HAFLA.

Gloria Viagra grew up near the Mosel river and in Cologne. She moved to Berlin with her mother as a child, lived with her in various women's shared flats and grew up in a left-wing politicized environment. Gloria's mother took her to many demonstrations, against the coup in Chile as well as to the first gay demonstration in Berlin in 1973. After a relatively late coming out, Gloria began her career as a political fag, today she is called a drag queen. She sees herself as the city's oldest drag queen still in service. Gloria moderates events, sings and performs and works as a DJane.

Jean-Ulrick Désert Jean-Ulrick Désert grew up in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and New York City, USA. Désert's art works vary in form: public billboards, actions, paintings, site-specific sculpture, video and art objects which engage with social and cultural practices. While living for a short while in Paris he visited Berlin in the mid 90ies during the wrapping of the Reichstag by Christo and fell in love with the city. He works as an conceptual and visial artist. After permanently moving to Berlin in 2002 he established his studio in Kreuzberg which for him is the one of the most queer and diverse neighbourhoods of Berlin. In his art performance piece NEGERHOSEN 2000 he processed a racist attack which happened in Berlin to him. Jean-Ulricks aim was always to earn his living by his artistic work. His financial abilities varied accordingly.

Monika Tichy Monika Tichy, grew up in Szczecin, Poland and was raised in a catholic and conservative family. She married Kazik who moved to Berlin six years after their son Alan was born. Monika turned to feminism and political activism and became an important figure in Polish queer activism. She has been strongly involved in Lambda Szczecin, an LGBTQ+ organisation, which provides counselling and help to queer and trans people and their families. One of the main activities is the organisation of the yearly Szczecin Pride parade. Monika represented the Polish queer community on many Pride and LGBTQ* events all over Europe. Currently lives together with her son Alan and her girlfried and partner Nora in Szczecin but travels to Berlin frequently which she considers as her second home town.

Mischa Badasyan Mischa Badasyan grew up in Rostov-at-Don (former USSR now Russia). A project of Aktion Sühnezeichen brought him to Germany at first. Being interested and active in social and activist topic already nach in Russia he studied social work in Dresden. He moved to Berlin where he worked as a social worker while he studied Kulturwissenschaften in Frankfurt/Oder. Mischa has worked a lot with immigrants and refugees, both in general asylum homes and one dedicated to LGBTQ* refugees only. Parallel to his ‚pay job‘ Mischa conducts his performances with an emphasis on one year long self exploring projects. In 2015 he did the performance project SAVE THE DATE in which he had to date a new person every single day for one entire year. Recently he moved into animal welfare, enviromental and food sharing projects and has distanced himself a bit from the queer subgroup.

Alyha Love Alyha Love, grew up in Long Beach, USA.

She moved to San Francisco where she joined the Bay Area party collective New World Dysorder which was founded in 2014. After moving to Berlin she met Eunice. In 2022 Eunice and Alyha got married.

Other legitimate interest in this relation is, e.g. a burden of proof in a procedure under the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG).

10. Legal basis for the processing

Art. 6(1) lit. a GDPR serves as the legal basis for processing operations for which we obtain consent for a specific processing purpose. If the processing of personal data is necessary for the performance of a contract to which the data subject is party, as is the case, for example, when processing operations are necessary for the supply of goods or to provide any other service, the processing is based on Article 6(1) lit. b GDPR. The same applies to such processing operations which are necessary for carrying out pre-contractual measures, for example in the case of inquiries concerning our products or services. Is our company subject to a legal obligation by which processing of personal data is required, such as for the fulfillment of tax obligations, the processing is based on Art. 6(1) lit. c GDPR. In rare cases, the processing of personal data may be necessary to protect the vital interests of the data subject or of another natural person. This would be the case, for example, if a visitor were injured in our company and his name, age, health insurance data or other vital information would have to be passed on to a doctor, hospital or other third party. Then the processing would be based on Art. 6(1) lit. d GDPR. Finally, processing operations could be based on Article 6(1) lit. f GDPR. This legal basis is used for processing operations which are not covered by any of the abovementioned legal grounds, if processing is necessary for the purposes of the legitimate interests pursued by our company or by a third party, except where such interests are overridden by the interests or fundamental rights and freedoms of the data subject which require protection of personal data. Such processing operations are particularly permissible because they have been specifically mentioned by the European legislator. He considered that a legitimate interest could be assumed if the data subject is a client of the controller (Recital 47 Sentence 2 GDPR).

11. The legitimate interests pursued by the controller or by a third party

Where the processing of personal data is based on Article 6(1) lit. f GDPR our legitimate interest is to carry out our business in favor of the well-being of all our employees and the shareholders.

12. Period for which the personal data will be stored

The criteria used to determine the period of storage of personal data is the respective statutory retention period. After expiration of that period, the corresponding data is routinely deleted, as long as it is no longer necessary for the fulfillment of the contract or the initiation of a contract.

13. Provision of personal data as statutory or contractual requirement; Requirement necessary to enter into a contract; Obligation of the data subject to provide the personal data; possible consequences of failure to provide such data

We clarify that the provision of personal data is partly required by law (e.g. tax regulations) or can also result from contractual provisions (e.g. information on the contractual partner). Sometimes it may be necessary to conclude a contract that the data subject provides us with personal data, which must subsequently be processed by us. The data subject is, for example, obliged to provide us with personal data when our company signs a contract with him or her. The non-provision of the personal data would have the consequence that the contract with the data subject could not be concluded. Before personal data is provided by the data subject, the data subject must contact any employee. The employee clarifies to the data subject whether the provision of the personal data is required by law or contract or is necessary for the conclusion of the contract, whether there is an obligation to provide the personal data and the consequences of non-provision of the personal data.

14. Existence of automated decision-making

As a responsible company, we do not use automatic decision-making or profiling.
